What is line velocity?

Standard CLV compares bet odds to closing odds. Velocity adds a dimension: where did you enter relative to the open? If line opened at 2.20, you bet 2.10, and it closed 1.85 — you caught sharp money early. If you bet 1.90 and it closed 1.85, you barely beat the close (much weaker edge). This calculator visualizes that timing.

Sharp bettors aim to bet right after the line moves on smart money — never against the closing direction. This is one of the strongest predictors of long-term profitability. Use alongside Value Bet finder to identify opportunities and No-vig to find the true price.

Open 2.50, bet 2.20, close 1.85. Line moved 26% from open to close. Your entry: caught 60% of the total move. Excellent timing — you bet WITH sharp money rather than against it. Score: A+. If you'd bet at 1.95 (only 9% of move captured), score would be D.

When to use

  • Verifying you're not betting steam (after sharp money moved)
  • Tracking your edge over many bets
  • Identifying which bookmakers move slowest (best targets)
