What is dutching?

Dutching means backing several selections in the same event so they all return the same profit if any one of them wins. Named after Dutch Schultz's race-fixing crew in the 1930s. It's useful when you've eliminated some of the field but can't pick a single winner. Mathematically related to Arbitrage (which is dutching applied across bookmakers) and Hedging (dutching applied after a bet is open). Check bookmaker margin before dutching — low margin means better collective returns.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Enter the odds of each selection you want to back (add more rows as needed).
  2. 2Enter your total stake.
  3. 3The calculator distributes the stake so each selection returns the same profit if it wins.

Example: dutching a horse race

Eight horses are running. You've eliminated five and want to back three: Lightning Bolt (3.0), Storm Chaser (5.0), Sea Mist (8.0). Total stake €100. The calculator distributes: €52 on Lightning Bolt, €31 on Storm Chaser, €19 on Sea Mist. If any one wins, you get about €156 back — €56 profit. You don't need to pick the exact winner, just one of your three.

When to dutch

  • Horse racing where you've narrowed the field to 2-4 contenders
  • Outright winner markets (tournament winner, league MVP)
  • Any time you have value on multiple outcomes but can't pick one
