How spread betting differs from fixed odds

Spread betting doesn't have fixed odds. Instead, the firm quotes a buy/sell range (e.g. Manchester City supremacy 1.4-1.6). You buy if you think the supremacy will be HIGHER than 1.6, sell if LOWER than 1.4. Your win or loss is the gap between your buy/sell price and the actual result, multiplied by your stake per unit. Different from Asian Handicap — spread betting has no fixed payout cap on the upside but also no cap on downside losses. Pair with Stop-loss planner for discipline.

Spread betting can produce explosive wins on blowouts (e.g. 4-0 result when you bought at +1.5 supremacy) but also explosive losses if you sell and the favourite wins by a margin. Always set hard stop-loss limits.

How to use

  1. 1Choose buy or sell direction.
  2. 2Enter the price you buy/sell at.
  3. 3Enter your stake per unit.
  4. 4Enter the actual result to see your P&L; or use max/min sliders to see exposure.

Example: City supremacy

City supremacy market: 1.4 sell / 1.6 buy. You buy at 1.6 with €10/unit stake. City wins 3-0 (supremacy = 3). You win (3 − 1.6) × €10 = €14. If City had won 2-1 (supremacy = 1): you LOSE (1 − 1.6) × €10 = €6. Notice losses for selling AND being wrong: if you'd sold at 1.4 and City won 4-0 (supremacy 4), you'd lose (4 − 1.4) × €10 = €26.

When to use

  • UK-based spread firm accounts
  • When you have strong directional opinion on margin (not just outcome)
  • Cricket total runs, rugby total points, football supremacy
